Interpretation

This interactive chart provides the quantity in metric tons (MT) and proportion of the food vehicle in the country that is industrially processed and thus presents an opportunity for fortification. Fortification is most easily implemented when food is industrially processed, due to the presence of modern automation, quality control and quality assurance practices, and lower regulatory monitoring resources required by government agencies. A food has been defined as industrially processed if it has been processed in facilities that meet the following capacity thresholds:

  • Wheat and maize flours – 20 MT/day grain processing rated capacity.
  • Rice – 5 MT hour paddy processing rated capacity.
  • Oil – 5 MT/day rated capacity.
  • Salt – 5,000 MT/year raw salt rated capacity.

In countries, this proportion of food reflects the maximum that could be fortified. Users can explore the data by hovering over the bar chart to view the total quantity or percentage of each food vehicle industrially processed each year. The visualization can be filtered by country income status, geographic region, country, food vehicle, and unit (MT or percentage).

Indicator and term descriptions

Amount and proportion of industrially processed food: The amount (in metric tons [MT]) and proportion of the total food available that is processed by an industrial processor. Ideally this quantity is required to be fortified according to relevant legislation (if mandatory legislation exists).

Total food available: The total annual food supply of the food vehicle in question that is available for human consumption, measured in metric tons (MT).

Methodology

GFDx populates its database through a bi-annual survey, aiming to reach 196 countries. In between survey cycles, the GFDx database is updated when new information is received directly from fortification partners and/or national stakeholders.
