Country Data

Introduction

The country dashboard provides a detailed summary of food fortification data for 196 countries and five foods: maize flour, oil, rice, salt, and wheat flour. For each country, the information is organized into three categories: fortification opportunity, foundational documents, and program performance.

Fortification Opportunity: These indicators provide information on a country’s potential for food fortification and include information on food intake and availability, the proportion of industrially processed food, and the percentage of the population consuming each food type.

Foundational Documents: Foundational documents outline the essential background of a country’s fortification programs and policies. This includes information about legislation status, fortification standards, and regulatory monitoring protocols.

Program Performance: These indicators report on the effectiveness of a fortification program and include data on fortification quality and compliance,  population coverage of fortified foods, potential nutrient contributions, and health outcomes before and after mandatory fortification.

Additional information
  • Food availability (total and daily) figures are from the most recent year available in the FAO Supply Utilization Accounts.
  • Daily food intake for salt is from Powles J et al 2017.
  • Daily food availability/intake categories reflect WHO guidelines for the fortification of wheat and maize flour and for salt.
  • Total food availability refers to the total amount of the commodity available for human consumption during the year, whereas daily food availability converts this volume into per capita per day estimates.
  • Daily food availability can be considered a proxy for daily food intake. Daily food intake is a measured estimate of human consumption, usually obtained through dietary surveys.
  • Before (adjustment): the calculation was done assuming 100% of the food is industrially processed and 100% of the food is fortified according to national fortification standards (i.e., is fully compliant).
  • After (adjustment): the calculation includes country data on the actual percentage of the food that is industrially processed and that is compliant.
  • Year noted refers to the year mandatory fortification legislation was originally passed.
  • Regions reflect regional definitions by the World Bank.
  • Industrial production of foods in manufacturing facilities is defined as: Oil – 5 MT/day rated capacity; Salt – 5,000 MT/year raw salt rated capacity; Rice – 5 MT/hour paddy processing rated capacity; Wheat and Maize Flours – 20 MT/day grain processing rated capacity
